Tuning Diesels Simple Modifications To Improve Diesel Car Performance

This is a quick guide to modifications to get more from any diesel engined car. While it is possible to go to much further, most of these diesel tuning suggestions are relatively cheap, quick and simple.

 Engine Upgrades

As diesel engines use compression ignition, the two main areas we are looking at for diesel tuning is the injection system and air intake.

Adding a tuning chip or external tuning box allows you to get more from your engine. Diesel engines often come in several performance variants, and are tuned to run on a wide range of fuel qualities. Modern diesel tuning systems - either the external diesel tuning box or internal chip remapping will adjust the engine parameters dynamically to give better power at all rev ranges. As a bonus, since you have more power available, you will often find you use less fuel overall - unless you have a very heavy right foot.

Choosing between a external tuning box and diesel remapping is largely a matter of preference. Costs are similar - normally around 300-500 for a quality system. Diesel tuning boxes can often be installed at home, while engine remapping will require a visit to a workshop, or a mobile workshop visit. The external tuning boxes also have the advantage that they can be removed if the car is going to a main dealer for servicing, or you want to transfer it to a new vehicle.

Some older systems for tuning diesel engines just 'fooled' the ECU into think it was colder, causing smoking and idling problems, but modern tuning boxes and tuning chips are much more complex, varying the adjustments they make depending on the engine requirements. These modern diesel tuning systems are probably the single biggest upgrade available to most people, with up to 35% more power promised, depending on your make and model.

A replacement air filter will give increased air flow, so giving more potential power. Almost all modern diesel engines will automatically allow the for increased air flow, giving a small boost of a handful of percent. Even replacing your current filter with a new standard filter will help, as they do become clogged over time.

 Tyre Upgrades

Surprisingly, tyres can give a significant boost to performance - although perhaps not straight line acceleration. Sports tyres give better grip (generally at the cost of reduced lifespan), which will improve cornering and braking. Switching to a lower profile type tyre improves handling by reducing the amount the tyres distort under heavy cornering. They do, however, generally give a harsher, noisier ride quality

Sport and low profile tyres are more expensive than regular tyres, but the only way to see if the gains are worth is is to try them, or try two identical vehicles with and without them fitted.

One other tyre upgrade worth mentioning is winter tyres. With a rubber compound that stays softer at lower temperatures, and tread designed to cope with water, snow, slush and ice, winter tyres will give significantly better grip that standard all year tyres. This will allow you to drive faster and more confidently when you would otherwise have to be very cautious. These are especially useful for higher performance or tuned diesel engined vehicles, as the large amount of torque available can easily lead to unwanted wheel spin in icy conditions.

 Body Upgrades

Contrary to what some believe, there are very few body upgrades that will have any beneficial effect on a cars performance. Add on wings, body kits and similar only add to the cars weight, and have a negligible effect on handling - some may even make it worse!

However , one body upgrade, that is worth considering is shock absorbers. Especially if your originals are more than a few years old, upgraded sport versions can offer better grip and handling. As most diesel engine cars are heavier than their petrol equivalents, firmer shock absorbers can help reduce body roll in corners, and power lost to unnecessary movements.

 Driver Upgrades!

One element we have not yet mentioned is driver habits. There are a few simple things you can do that will provide benefits on any vehicle.

Keep the weight down by not carrying unnecessary weight.
Keep the car aerodynamic by keeping windows and sunroofs closed, and not adding external add-ons
Keep the car maintained regularly, with oil, filters and general maintenance to get the most from it
Go on an advanced driver training course or a track experience day to get some tuition from a professional driver, who can teach you how to drive safely at speed, reading the road ahead, racing lines, handling skids and more.

Car Resale

Buying a car can be fun and exciting; you can choose a car that reflects your personality. However if you want to resell your car in the future, there are a few things to consider, as certain aspects will govern its future saleability. Try and settle for a car that is appealing to others, which you can also enjoy. If you wish to resell in the near future, you should keep in mind what would work for you, as well as what would work with the majority of others.

Modifications: Modifying your car not only boosts your insurance premiums, but can also affect its saleability. If you want to upgrade your motor in anyway, but wish to resell, be sure that the modifications made can be undone easily if need be. Keep the original parts that you've replaced; this will give the buyer the option if they wish to have the stock items on the car. Modifications can also help in your favour if considered correctly. A nice stereo and speakers will generate more interest than an over sized exhaust.

Colour: Choose a common coloured car. A pink car may seem appealing, but will limit the amount of interest in the future.

Service: Choose a car that has a good reputation of being reliable, and keep up to date on all servicing and repairs.

Future: Consider trends in fuel and technology, there's an increasing worry about fuel prices, and people looking for economic cars. That gas guzzler that is just about accepted today, maybe blacklisted in years to come. Ensure that your chosen car has all the basic safety and security technology, technology that would probably be expected as standard on all cars in the future.

Buying Your First Car - How To Buy A Used Car From A Private Party

Buying your first car is usually one of the biggest and important investments you have to make and more and more people are choosing not to buy used cars sold from used car dealers and deciding to buy used cars from private parties to get the best bargains. In fact, there are more used cars for sale by private owners than ever before and this is mainly due to the financial crisis. This means its a real buyers market now and if you follow these expert tips on how to buy a used car from a private party you will drive away in your first car faster saving you a ton of money...time...and headaches.

Shopping for your first car can also be an exciting time but Just remember that when you're buying a used car from a private party it's important to be in the drivers seat and be in control so you can get the facts about the car first. Doing so can help you be more certain you're actually getting the car you want at the price that's right. To do this you need to ask the hard questions. The reason we call them the hard questions is because they get the facts and the facts are what we use to make our product decision and to negotiate with.

The most important hard question to ask the seller is, "Have you put back what you have taken?" or put simply "Have you had the car serviced regularly?". When the seller feels they need to be the salesperson and sell you their car they usually think selling is telling and want to tell you how wonderful the car has been to them and that they have been everywhere in it but what you want to know is, what will the car do for me if I buy it and the only way to know this is by asking for the log books/service books and/or maintenance receipts.

When looking at the service and repair history you are trying to verify whether the seller has had the vehicle serviced on a regular basis and what repairs and/or modifications have been carried out.

It's now time to take a look around the vehicle with a car checklist. Most people think if they know nothing about cars they can't inspect a car but this is wrong. By following a car checklist and learning and implementing some tips it can really mean the difference between buying your dream car or buying a lemon that continues costing you money after you buy it.

Take the car for a serious test drive. Test the acceleration and give the brakes a workout. Make sure the steering wheel doesn't wander from left to right or shake. Drive up and down hills, down highways and through stop-and-go traffic. Listen for any strange noises.

Before you move on to negotiation, Consult the Kelley Blue Book or in Australia go to Red Book to learn what a car is worth before going to the negotiating table. Be prepared to bargain for the best deal on your car.

When financing, beware of advertisements offering tempting deals to people with bad credit or first-time buyers. Find out your exact budget, you're weekly/monthly repayments before you go buying a private car because when you do find a good one you want to act quickly so having your finance ready to go not only gives you confidence but leverage in negotiation as well.

Of course, you can always rent a car, but that would cost a lot of money. you know that renting an auto is really high priced. It is better for you to have your own car, because a car can also be a good investment if you choose the right one.

There are several things that you need to consider when you are going to buy a family car. The first thing to consider is the size. a family car should be able to carry the complete family. If the car cannot carry the whole family, then what is the point of owning a family car? You should try to find a car that you can afford. But in case you don't have enough money for the car that you really wanted, you can lease the car.

Toyota Avanza is the most affordable car type from Toyota. This car is not too big, but it is big enough for the whole family, if you only have two or three children. Customized Car Body Kits

So you have decided to give your car a new look. Wondering how to go about it? Without a second thought, the answer is auto body kits! They are a set of custom modifications that can be added to your car to improve its looks and functionality.

The first step to get started with body kits is checking with your car manufacturer for details. If you're lucky, there might be a company body kit section from the makers of your car. This is an advantage because the chance that this kit will fit your car perfectly is higher. Some manufacturers even have a facility to let the customer choose the graphics and themes on the customizations.

Bumpers are commonly on of the first parts to be modified by most car owners. Both front and rear bumpers can be modified. Choosing the right bumper model can improve your car's performance too. Low dipping bumpers with aerodynamically efficient shapes are found in many cars these days. They are also helpful when traveling through muddy roads, as they keep the mud away from the underside of the cars. Side skirts are used to compliment bumper modifications. Without actually lowering the car's suspensions, they can give the car an aggressive look. This makes your car look way cooler, without actually making any changes that might damage the car. There are specialized bumper mod manufacturers who work on making exclusive customized bumpers on order.

Next in the line are spoilers. They are specially engineered add-ons to vehicles whose main purpose is to reduce unwanted air flow around the car. This reduces drag and improves fuel efficiency. Spoilers also give your car a certain look that's reminiscent of small powerful planes. This is because spoiler is a technology borrowed from the aviation industry. Spoilers placed on the car's front side are called air dams. They divert air coming onto the vehicle to the sides, thus reducing the turbulence. Auto experts often criticize customers for buying spoilers just for the sake of the looks, giving no thought to the airflow dynamics. They argue that in some cases, this might even be counter-productive. The cheapest of spoilers are made with normal plastics. But they are nothing more than toys compared to silicon fiber spoilers. Plastics suffer from the bane of being frail.

The front hood can also be customized. They are designed with improved air holes to increase air flow around the engine. This results in maintaining a cooler engine. A cooler engine means efficient fuel consumption. It also comes with custom graphics to suit the owner's needs. Along with the hood, the front grill can also be changed. It is amazing how much better an engine can run with small modifications like these. The main aim is to let more air to the engines. They also give your car a costly look like royal cars. Factory fitted body kits are available today that can be ordered along with the car itself. This ensures a better fit and a guarantee direct from the manufacturer!
